My friend Meri thinks that at the exact center of the United States we should dig a huge hole and stick a giant umbrella in it, creating a massive outdoor table. This would work because the center of the US is flat, and irrigation exists so blocking out rain isn't a big deal.
On a slightly different note, kind of in honor of father's day in a way, I dreamt that my dad and I opened a record store, but instead of having people send us new stuff, we just used what we already had to be sold. It was weird. And there was a fireplace in it. And then the dream kind of shifted to a more corporate mall type of deal and I married this half Indian guy and then asked my dad for divorce papers as if it was totally normal. I explained that I got married knowing that we would be split up shortly after. Which is not normal. No Noel Fielding in this one, but that's probably for the best.
Joe is quite possibly the most adorable member of The Horrors.

I've been having incredibly strange dreams lately. Possibly because of me recently going off my meds, but whatever. In the dream, Noel Fielding was one of those professional wrestlers that fly around all over the place (think Jeff Hardy, not literally flying) and I was following the tour around and hanging out backstage. And Gerard Way was there. And then I got in trouble, but not really and I kind of became somebody's PA and then Noel Fielding came in carrying his artwork and then I woke up.
Why would Noel Fielding be a pro wrestler, granted he was wearing a cape, and I personally would have nothing against him wrestling, say, me. But it's still quite strange....
And I say, even though they've made enough money to record their new album (!!!!), us fans of Robots in Disguise continue to pledge so they can do a proper US tour in support of it! After the UK and Euro tours, of course. I posted the video for their latest single, Wake Up!, a while back, so check the archives! (And may I just say, I absolutely love Dee's hair in the video! And the little beret! And Sue is totally rocking that mushroom do'! Karen O couldn't rock it nearly as well as her. And I'm a huge Yeah Yeah Yeahs fan.)
Sorry US fans, but the single isn't available on Itunes US, so the video will have to do for now :).
Whilst paroozing other blogs I saw a post about a new fad that I wholeheartedly endorse: Dyeing your animals to look like other (more exotic) animals! This panda dog is so cute!!!!!
I have weaned myself off of anti-depressants, and am of sound mind when I say that everything is going to be fine.
I am IN LOVE with Balmain's fall 2010 collection!! Those jackets! Those skinnies! The decadence! I'm sooo want the whole outfit in the bottom left. Fave.
Do NOT try to make it to the art museum's new gallery opening party, and a good friend's graduation party (you only really wanted to go because that one douchebag would be there and this past year has been really good to you), and hang out with a friend coming in from the west side...
...when your car has been hit by some asshole on a cell phone and your main modes of transportation are your feet and your daddy.
This is a photo I took this past year in an antique shop in Chagrin Falls.

1. Who the fuck is Rain and why should I give a shit?
2. I like that commercial for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 where the old guy is just sitting on a couch talking about people "doing it". I put that in quotes because he's supposed to be talking about people playing the video game. Advertisers are smart.
3. Why is it so hot? Why?! WHY?!
4. I registered for fall classes yesterday. I feel so growed up! The best part is that I don't have to go to class until 1pm on Mondays. Yay badass foundation class!!
5. On a similar note to #4, I'm going to Kansas City Art Institute. Now, I'm originally from Lawrence, KS, and we moved here to Cleveland when I was 8. I don't know how I feel about "going back home". I know that Kansas City is a cool place, and my painting teacher went there and was so happy that I was going because she is "Like, literally in love with that school! Are you excited?!" (My painting teacher is an amazing woman whose catchphrases include "Do you love it?!" and "Are you excited?!" She's cool as what.) I plan on doing their study abroad and maybe their semester in Brooklyn (to make up for the fact that Pratt didn't give me enough money). I'm excited to travel and be grown up without actually being grown up.
6. I was talking to my dad the other day and my sister walked in, not unusual, and I said something like "I can't wait to move to London when I'm done with college" and she said something like "yeah right". EXCUSE ME, little miss 'I Failed Gym Class', but I can do whatever I want with my life and if I want to get the hell out of this country and see the world, you can suck it! She then tried to remedy the situation by bringing up the cost of a plane ticket. Really? A one time plane ticket = no big deal.
7. I've recently listened to Lily Allen. No, I didn't listen to her when she first got big. It wasn't because I didn't like her, it was because it was in the middle of my 'trying to be cool' phase of life. She's really good! I like her a lot.
8. My friend is going to Lollapalooza without me. Hello?! We've only been friends since I was in 4th grade and you were in 6th! And I'm now a freshman in college! I can go! Grr. I'm not really angry at her because she works so hard for everything and she totally deserves it, but Lady Fucking Gaga is playing! Lady Gaga! She better take lots of pictures.
9. I want a Starbucks in my house. With a full-time employee. One that will make me extra-coffee caramel frapuccino's and pumpkin spice lattes whenever I want no matter what time or season it is. That would be sweet. Literally.
10. I've been sucked in by fishville. I have this little pink fish that I named Ultra and a little gold fish that I named Vince Noir (Boosh characters!) They're so cute! And oh so dependent on me. And yet they're virtual, so I don't actually have to clean a tank or smell fish and fish food. Plus, who wants real fish? They're boring and not cute. The little cartoon fish are cute.
11. I'm glad to be done with High School. I'm glad to be 18. Just knowing that I can legally do (almost) anything is somewhat comforting. Even though I'm still quite dependent on my parents. And I'm terrified for them to ever find out that I've been smoking. And I'm sure that I'll be calling them quite a bit next year asking them basic life stuff. But still. I can do (almost) anything! And that's nice.
12. I don't get why the drinking age is 21. At 16 I can drive and get a job. At 18 I can live on my own, provide for myself, take out loans, vote, join the army, buy cigarettes, etc, etc, but I can't have a beer? That's fucked up. Sure, if they changed it there would be an immediate increase in young people drinking. But after it normalized I think there would be less occurrences of underage drinking getting people into trouble. There will always be underage drinking, no matter what. But I think the fact that we have to wait so long to drink is what draws some people to it in the first place.
13. Tosh.0 is the best show ever. Daniel Tosh is so funny! The clips themselves are funny to start with, and he manages to make them even funnier! My favorite clip I think I've ever seen is the guy who was all up in this chick's face and some guy pulls his pants down. Best. In fact..
What a beautiful face I have found in this place That is circling all round the sun What a beautiful dream That could flash on the screen In a blink of an eye and be gone from me Soft and sweet Let me hold it close and keep it here with me, me
And one day we will die And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea But for now we are young Let us lay in the sun And count every beautiful thing we can see Love to be In the arms of all I'm keeping here with me, me
What a curious life we have found here tonight There is music that sounds from the street There are lights in the clouds Anna's ghost all around Hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me Soft and sweet How the notes all bend and reach above the trees, trees
Now how I remember you How I would push my fingers through Your mouth to make those muscles move That made your voice so smooth and sweet Now we keep where we don't know All secrets sleep in winter clothes With one you loved so long ago Now he don't even know his name
What a beautiful face I have found in this place That is circling all round' the sun And when we meet on a cloud I'll be laughing out loud I'll be laughing with everyone I see Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all

I am as careless as an eight year old with her first bicycle. I only hope I don't get hit by a car.

On a side note, my cat has decided to be incredibly cute and distracting, and fishville has taken over my life.
Middle America, quite literally.
Why is it that as I get older I hate the dentist more and more? When I was younger it didn't matter to me at all. Sure, fluoride was uncomfortable and made my lips really chapped, but I was okay with the dentist. Maybe it's because of all the teeth pulling, braces wearing, uncomfortable nighttime headgear, retainers, and my terrible fear that my gums are receding and I'm going to have to get surgery just like my dad. Heck, I even freaked out when they put my veneers on! All they do is glue them! Oy, and the anesthesia is the worst. That huge needle coming at you and there's nothing you can do to stop it because if you do you will be in even more horrible pain. Fucking dentists.
I want to start by saying that I particularly love England and the English and pretty much everything English in general.
Now that I have said that, I find it hard to believe that the British are upset about BP taking a huge hit. They would have taken a huge hit even if no pressure had been put on them by our government. Now I'm not saying that explicitly anti-British comments are okay, but BP, and the manufacturers of the oil siphoning device should take huge hits, both financially and stock-wise. This oil spill is a major ecological catastrophe, and one that the Earth cannot afford. We're already under the huge threat of Global Warming and Climate Change, and massive damage to the oceans is not helping any.
British pensioners have a right to be worried about their pensions. That is true. But if BP wants to continue making substantial money in the US, then something needs to work. Even if/when the spill gets fixed, there is still the matter of cleaning up the Gulf shores and the ocean itself, as well as the animals that have been harmed in the process. I'm firmly support all ecological aid groups, and the spill is a major ecological issue, the biggest one currently at hand.
On a slightly different note, English people: I'm not gonna lie, Barack Obama doesn't care as much about what you think of him as he does what American voters do. He's not going to back up BP. He's not going to cater to your upset pensioners. It might continue the world seeing Americans as ignorant and self-absorbed, but David Cameron would do the same thing if something like this happened in your neck of the woods. He would want to continue his political career, not make Americans like him. Everyone is facing hard economic times. Lots of people are affected by the oil spill. Obama is not going to back down on BP.
For those of you who don't know, Terry Gilliam is the guy who did all the animations for Monty Python's Flying Circus. I absolutely LOVE his work. His aesthetic vision is great, and I always enjoy looking at his animations. As well as his most recent movie, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Most people only know about the movie because of the Heath Ledger drama. It's a great movie, a bit hard to follow the first time you watch it, but great nonetheless. And it looks incredible!
I've decided to make this post into a "Videos I like" page.
I don't know if you guys remember Chris Crocker, the "Leave Britney Alone" guy, but he has many other hilarious videos, this being one of them. I strongly encourage you to watch as many as you can (He has over 200).
As always, I must include something Booshy. The part about Jerry Lee Lewis is the best.
My favorite Cyanide and Happiness short.
And one of the Horrors tour diaries. Joe is particularly funny in this one.
This is a tough one. Yes, tougher than the one about my favorite book. I like quotes, but I've never had one single favorite. Here's a few:
"What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?" -Rob in High Fidelity
"It's really not hard to keep your dignity and sign to a major label...Most people don't have any dignity in the first place." -Kurt Cobain As quoted in Sounds (October, 1990)
"I prefer women's company to men's. Men are very narrow and conditioned to behave in a certain way. Women are cooler about stuff." -Noel Fielding
"Dear diary, my teen-angst bullshit now has a body count. Everybody's sad...but it's kind of a weird kind of sad. Suicide gave Heather depth, Kurt a soul, and Ram a brain. I don't know what it's given me, but I have no control over myself when I'm with J.D. Are we going to prom or to hell?" -Winona Ryder in Heathers
"Adolescence is a marketing tool." -Frances McDormand in Almost Famous
If I had been doing this say, 6 months ago, this would have been difficult. But in those past 6 months I have discovered, casually viewed, fallen in love with, and obsessively viewed THE MIGHTY BOOSH.
There is absolutely nothing better than it. It's fantastical and hilarious and original and aesthetically pleasing all in one package! I'm super excited for the movie and the albums (a series of EPs supposedly!). The best part is that the show makes you wanna be friends with all the characters. I would totally genre-jump with Vince and scat sing with Howard!
Not to mention that Julian Barratt kind of looks and acts like my father. Which is really fucking cool in my book. (On an unrelated note, I keep telling my dad to get a monocle and he won't do it. Back me up here? Monocles are sweet.)
My only current problem with The Mighty Boosh is that The Future Sailors tour is only out on DVD encoded for Region 2. Let's get on a US release shall we boys?! I don't want to have to buy a fancy DVD device to play it on! And I want the playing cards that come in the special edition.... Pretty please?
Some of my other favorite shows are The IT Crowd, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Reno 911, The Inbetweeners, Strangers With Candy, and Boy Meets World.
First of all, BP should stop trying to find someone to blame and just clean up their mess.
Second of all, why hasn't another major petroleum company come up with a solution? Think about it. If you're, say, Shell and you come of with a way to fix the massive hemorrhage (that isn't shooting garbage and various other nasty things at it in order to plug it up) then you'll be a national hero. And more people will buy your gas. Not only is it humanitarian and environmentalist, but it's a triumph of capitalism! This is America, after all. And if one company's loss can be another company's gain, well that should be reason enough to fix the spill!
In the afternoon I've got coffee breath Cover it up with a cigarette
This post has been a long time coming. At the end of last month I did the yearly AP art field trip to Pittsburgh, comprised of going to the Warhol Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Mattress Factory. The Mattress Factory is an installation-based museum. Currently they're showing an exhibit called Gestures, this is the 14th installment. It's a group of local artists creating site-specific works. My favorite one was made by Robert Villamagna. It's real things people have said to him, put into speech bubbles over little character representations of the people who said them. So cool. Very pop art.
My favourite movie would have to be On the Edge, starring Cillian Murphy.
The movie is about Jonathan (Cillian Murphy), a young man who early in the movie attempts to kill himself by driving over the edge of a cliff. He is given a choice, go to jail (the car he drove over the cliff was stolen), or enter a mental institution. Well jail wouldn't be that interesting in the context of this movie, so he obviously chooses to spend some time in the mental institution. While he is there he meets a new friend in Toby, and a love interest in Rachel. The film chronicles his relationship with these people, as well as with his doctor (played by Stephen Rea). It's an Irish film, so Cillian doesn't have to cover up his accent! Not to mention an exquisite soundtrack, including music from Smashing Pumpkins, Therapy?, and the Pixies. I highly recommend it.
This one is particularly hard for any big time music fan. So I'll go with one that has become one of my more recent favorites.
Sea Within a Sea- The Horrors
This song is absolutely amazing. The first single off their second album, Primary Colours. I remember when this first came out and the video was the only thing on their website. My jaw literally dropped and I sat there agape and in utter awe. A total departure for them. An amazing collection of everything I love about music. It starts dark and haunting, and ends in an almost uplifting series of synths and then an ultimate fadeout. And as it's the last track on the album, it loops around and connects to the first track on the album, Mirror's Image.

While I must admit I am intrigued by the new Bravo show, as I am watching it right now, I also can't help but be skeptical. As an artist of some sort, I realize how great an opportunity it is. The main prize is a solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Art Museum! That's an amazing opportunity. But art is inherently subjective. And I can't help but think that the whole thing is bogus. How are they going to judge art this way? All pieces of art (and artists for that matter) are judged both positively and negatively. One limited panel of judges isn't going to accurately critique a piece. And with all the intermingling styles of each artist things are going to get very hairy.
However, the setup of the show is the intriguing part. The show is setup in a Project Runway-esque sort of way, in that the contestants are given broad challenges to complete within a certain amount of time. This provides a test of the contestants creativity that has probably never been matched in their lives (hell, you have more time in art school, and no, your procrastinating doesn't count). It's an exciting venture, and an exciting show to watch. But you know the old saying, critics don't want something straightforward, they want something that needs to be analyzed. I hope the contestants keep that in mind. The more ridiculous these artists present their ideas, the better.
And so far my favorite artist is the unemployed guy who sleeps either in his truck or at his parents house. I especially love that he says he doesn't know exactly what Miles is doing, but he likes it anyway because it's loud, and he has goggles and fancy equipment. He's hysterical and goofy and I love it.

"I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity."
